Slate license agreement
Last updated November 3, 2026
This agreement is between you and Kazbit, and covers your use of Slate. By installing or using Slate, you agree to it. If you don’t agree, don’t install Slate. If you’ve already bought it, you can get a refund.
1. Your license
When you buy Slate, you get a license key. The key lets you use Slate under this agreement. You’re buying a license to use Slate, not the software itself.
- Version. A license covers every release of one major version of Slate, forever. A Slate 1 license covers 1.0, 1.1, 1.9 and every other 1.x release. Slate 2 is a separate purchase.
- Macs. You can activate your key on as many Macs as your purchase states. You can free up a Mac at any time in your account and activate another.
- Who. A license is for one person, for personal or work use. If several people at your company use Slate, each needs a license.
2. Updates
Your license includes every update to its major version that we release. We aren’t obliged to release updates, or to keep making a major version once the next one is out. The last release of each major version stays available to download for people who own it.
3. What you may not do
- Share, sell, rent or publish your license key, or use someone else’s key.
- Get around the license check, or help anyone else do so.
- Copy, modify or distribute Slate itself, except as the law allows despite this restriction.
- Reverse engineer Slate, except as the law allows despite this restriction.
4. Your boards are yours
Everything you make in Slate belongs to you. We get no rights to it, and Slate doesn’t send it to us. Whatever happens to your license, Slate never stops you opening your boards. Without a valid license they open, copy and export, but can’t be edited. Boards are SVG files, which other apps can read too.
5. Other software and services
Slate includes open-source software, which is licensed to you under its own terms. Slate can connect to AI apps you choose, such as Claude, Codex or Cursor. Your use of those apps is governed by their own terms.
6. Payment and refunds
Polar is the merchant of record for Slate. It handles payment, tax and your receipt. If Slate isn’t for you, our refund policy gives you 14 days for a full refund. A refund ends your license.
7. Ending the license
Your license lasts until it ends in one of these ways:
- you get a refund, or
- you break this agreement and don’t fix it after we tell you about it.
You can stop using Slate at any time. If your license ends, stop using Slate to edit boards. Your boards remain yours.
8. Privacy
Our privacy policy explains exactly what Slate sends: license activation and checks, and update checks. Nothing else leaves your Mac unless you send it.
9. No warranty
Slate is provided “as is”. To the extent the law allows, we make no warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability and non-infringement. We don’t promise that Slate will be free of bugs or never lose data. Keep backups of work that matters. Some places don’t allow these exclusions, so some of them may not apply to you.
10. Limits on liability
To the extent the law allows, Kazbit isn’t liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost data or profits, arising from your use of Slate. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for your license. Nothing here limits liability that the law doesn’t allow us to limit.
11. Changes to this agreement
We may update this agreement for future releases. The version that applies to a release is the one in effect when that release came out. A change never takes away a license you’ve already bought.
